10 Actors Whose Careers Never Rebounded

4. Gary Busey

People tend to forget that Gary Busey was once an Oscar-nominated actor. And an honourable man. When people would approach him to sign pictures of Buddy Holly, to whom he played to perfection in The Buddy Holly Story, he would politely refuse and say that there was, and always will be, only one Buddy Holly.

That's a fairly measured response from a man who, if approached today, would scream rambling obscenities and things that sounded like words.

We all enjoy a good laugh, and there are plenty of Busey moments on and off screen that bring us some guilty pleasure, but his story is ultimately very tragic. In 1988, Busey was in a horrific motorcycle accident while not wearing a helmet, causing permanent brain damage that has only recently - thanks in part to reality show Celebrity Rehab - been documented to help understand his erratic behaviour throughout the 90s.

It appears the brain damage affected his head the same way it famously did railworker Phineas Gage, who had an iron rod shot through his left frontal lobe. Though both survived, their personalities drastically altered, removing any mental filters most of us engage in common conversation. Recent research in alcoholism - another issue with which Busey has struggled - suggest a similar relationship to that part of the brain, where most of our decision-making, rationale and creativity dwell.

So if ever you need to understand a Trump supporter...
