8. Tobey Maguire - Rock Of Ages
Based on the popular Broadway musical of the same name, 2012's Rock of Ages attempted to translate the Tony Award Nominated 80s hair metal show to the big screen. As with most adaptations, the translation wasn't one-to-one, making changes where necessary and even cutting songs entirely.
Whether or not this cause the movie to perform poorly at the box office is certainly up for debate. Having made only half of its production budget of $75 million back, the pockets of both New Line Cinema and producer Tobey Maguire feeling the loss.
Known for his role as Peter Parker in Sam Raimi's Spiderman trilogy from the early 2000s, Maguire has been an interesting case to follow. Whether it was his role in Seabiscuit (another production funded by himself) or his later role in The Great Gatsby, Maguire has shown a wide array of range and interests. Broadway musicals and 1980s hair metal appears to be one of those diverse interests as well, but not one he's revisited since.
