10 All-Star Cast Whodunnits To Watch Before Knives Out
3. The Last Of Sheila (1973)
The Last Of Sheila is quite possibly the best tribute to Agatha Christie without being an actual adaptation of one of her novels. It might not have a world-famous detective and his equally famous "grey cells," but the way the movie proceeds makes it genuinely memorable among the class of whodunnits.
The movie was co-written by Stephen Sondheim and Mr. Psycho himself, Anthony Perkins, and inspired by actual scavenger hunts they used to organize for their celebrity friends. As some of the guests in the movie are based on exaggerated versions of real celebrities they knew, that in itself offers excellent pedigree for the characters.
The ending might seem a little silly in retrospect. The point can be made that scavenger hunt games are usually silly trite fun, but the ingenious premise and characters more than makeup for it.
