10 Alternate Endings That Almost Ruined Classic Horror Movies
6. The Fly
The Proper Ending: Man-fly
hybrid Seth Brundle abducts his pregnant girlfriend Veronica Quaife and whisks
her away to his lab to fuse him, her and their unborn baby into one ghastly
abomination via his telepods. With the help of her sleazy boss and ex-boyfriend
Stathis she manages to escape while Brundlefly accidentally fuses himself to
his own telepod. Oops.
Realising the monstrosity he’s become, Brundlefly begs Veronica to end his suffering so she mercy kills him by blasting his head off. Now that’s true love.
The Awful Alternate Ending: Originally, director David Cronenberg tacked on a strange epilogue set several months later that sees Veronica and Stathis now a couple with the former having aborted Brundlefly’s baby and gotten pregnant again by Stathis. Jesus, this woman’s life is complicated.
We then see Veronica dreaming of her unborn child as a foetus with butterfly wings which is probably meant to be a touching metaphor for something or other but just comes across as plain weird even in a film featuring maggot babies and inside out baboons.
