10 Alternate Scenes That Completely Change Famous Movies

8. Garth's Spiral - Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Ferris Bueller's Day Off is absolutely an undisputed classic. However, it's also hard to explain why exactly we should be rooting for Ferris.

Sure he says everything he's doing is to help Cameron, but he's also a spoiled rich kid who lies, ditches school and manipulates his friends and families. Even director John Hughes thought he was a bit of a jerk. That's why he cast Matthew Broderick in the role, because the human brain is actually physically incapable of hating him. The whole thing throws up a question of exactly how much we're supposed to emphasise with Ferris.

In a deleted scene though, we get a better look at Ferris' motivations. Charlie Sheen's strung-out delinquent character Garth Volbeck was originally going to have a much larger role. He was going to be another friend of Ferris' who he had tried and failed to help. Watching his friend degenerate into a drug addicted burnout motivated Ferris to go to the extreme lengths seen in the film to make sure Cameron also didn't waste his life.

As a bonus bit of irony, Charlie Sheen actually stayed awake 48 hours to achieve his character's spacey look. That was the only possible method he could think of to convincingly play a drug addict.
