10 Alternative Movie Endings Way Better Than What We Got
5. The Butterfly Effect: Evan Commits In Utero Suicide
Critics were unmoved by Ashton Kutcher's chaos theory thriller The Butterfly Effect when it flapped its way into theatres in 2004, though it may have left more of an impression with its alternate ending in place.
The time-hopping movie deals with the potential consequences of meddling with the past, and in the cinematic cut, Kutcher's Evan travels back to sever ties with his love interest to save her from an abusive father after feeling said consequences. Having Kutcher then burn the journal which facilitates his time travelling abilities to ensure none of this happens again caps off this predictable conclusion.
But The Butterfly Effect almost had a much darker ending that nobody would have seen coming. One of its alternate curtain closers sees Evan reach the realisation that his time bending has spiralled out of control and cannot be undone.
With this in mind, he travels back to a time before his birth and commits suicide in utero by strangling himself with the umbilical cord.
Instead of ending on an eye-rollingly predictable note, The Butterfly Effect almost had one of the most WTF conclusions in movie history.
