Jurassic Park boasts one of the most unforgettable opening scenes in cinema history, where a dinosaur handler is killed by a velociraptor, setting the rest of the movie's events in motion.

Yet co-writer David Koepp originally had a more subdued and ambiguous prelude in mind for the groundbreaking blockbuster, which would take place in a Costa Rican hospital, where a helicopter arrives containing the victim of a "construction accident."

A doctor would take one look at the man who, in Koepp's own words, was "ripped to shreds," and exclaim that this was most certainly not a construction accident. And so, the rest of the movie plays out.

Koepp loved the opening, though it was ultimately rejected by Spielberg for being too similar to the introductory scene from Jaws, where a woman's remains are similarly perused by the medical examiner. Koepp elaborated on his issues writing the movie's opening:

"The problem I encountered, and I still encounter today when I work with Steven, is his movies are so influential, you have a tendency to create something you think he'll like...I kind of wanted to just type for him. You have to let that go. He doesn't need acolytes, he needs collaborators."
