10 Alternative Opening Movie Scenes You Never Saw
4. A Trip To The Past - The Incredibles
The Incredibles features one of the most memorable opening sequences in any Pixar movie, showcasing the glory days of the titular superhero supergroup before their heroic days are numbered by collateral damage and lawsuits, forcing The Incredibles to hang up the spandex and become regular citizens.
But director Brad Bird originally conceived a completely different, elaborate opening sequence which introduced audiences to Bob and Helen Parr (Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter).
This alternate opening drops audiences right into the Parrs living life as retired former superheroes, where they're attending a neighbourhood barbecue and basically pretending to be "normal" people.
Helen is disparaged for "only" being a housewife while a woman catches Bob slice a knife through his fingers, forcing him to feign injury despite being invulnerable.
However, this leads to a shady individual contacting the film's villain, Syndrome (Jason Lee), about the former Incredibles' location, leading to a fight scene in the Parr's home, where Syndrome gets the better of the unsuspecting pair.
They're only saved when baby Violet turns invisible and spits up on Syndrome's face, allowing her parents to trap the villain in their house before a gas leak blows it sky high.
It's a brilliantly crafted introduction in its own right, though Bird believes they made the right call by actually showing The Incredibles in their prime and quickly summarising the events which led to their dissatisfied present.
