10 Amazing 21st-Century Movie Villains Who Aren’t Spoken About Enough
4. Koba – Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
Certain characters, elements and events stick out like a sore thumb regarding why the rebooted franchise is held in such high regard by many, and one overwhelming reason for this is due to Toby Kebbell’s villainous Koba. Set in a world where apes and humans attempt and struggle to co-exist with one another, Koba is the ideal candidate to rival Andy Serkis’ Caesar. The Bonobo and Chimpanzee couldn’t be more different, and that’s what makes their on-screen conflict so compelling.
Former friends turned foes, both primates represent the worst in one another. They are physical reminders to each other of what they could become if the other succeed in their contrasting methods of dealing with the humans. Koba and Caesar share a yin and yang connection in which the former is vicious, volatile and hostile toward humans. On the other hand, the latter is calm, calculated and diplomatic toward them which sees Koba attempt a mutiny on multiple occasions to overthrow Caesar’s leadership.
Koba is highly intelligent, manipulative and dangerous making him a real force to be reckoned with from both the apes' and humans' perspectives. Koba’s existence simply wouldn’t be possible without Kebbell’s masterful motion-capture performance, who breathes life into a role that just wouldn’t have the same impact if created purely by CGI.
