10 Amazing "Call And Responses" In Wrestling
8. John Cena - Insert Swear Word Here
One of the greatest superstars in WWE history got off to a rocky start in his career, back in 2002. With generic trunks and little character beyond his ‘Ruthless Aggression’ introduction, Cena was apparently on the chopping block within the year.
That was until, apparently, Stephanie McMahon overheard him freestyling on a bus and suggesting he bring it to the screen.
Thus, the ‘Doctor of Thuganomics’ was born.
It didn’t take long for the gimmick to catch fire, with Cena’s pre-match raps ripping his opponent to shreds, and in a company suffering from the post Stone Cold and Rock slump, the fans saw a potential new franchise player.
Edgy. Risky. Cena was presented fantastically and his organic babyface turn came about because the fans genuinely cheered him despite being a heel. (Hilariously, they would go on to boo him for years as a babyface, but that's a different story.)
At the end of his freestyle raps, Cena would line up his final line to clearly include a profanity he would never be allowed to say on screen. So what he did, which was genius, was hold the mic up for the rabid fans to eagerly chant it instead.
Very clever. And considering it helped birth the last major wrestling star, it evidently worked very well.
