10 Amazing Action Scenes From Terrible Movies
5. The Sporting Goods Store Brawl (Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning)
Universal Soldier is the 1992 Jean-Claude Van Damme vehicle about a secret government recycling project to reanimate, brainwash, and reuse dead soldiers (with the vehicle in question being a garbage truck driving off a cliff.)
Despite its cult status, Universal Soldier performed horribly at the box office and with the critics, which is why it’s so weird they made so many equally-bad sequels to it. But it’s a good thing they did because the franchise’s fourth installment, Day of Reckoning, features one of the most vicious, Terminator-esque fights ever put in a sci-fi action flick.
The best part about the sporting goods store brawl between the protagonist John (Scott Adkins) and the UniSol named Magnus is that the two act as if they were from different movies. John fights or rather tries to fight like a cliché action hero, with acrobatic kicks and martial arts, all while Magnus fights to kill as quickly and mercilessly as possible. With every attack, he goes for maximum damage, focusing on total, brutal efficiency instead of trying to make the fight look “cool.” In short, he fights like an actual emotionless killing machine.
Without meaning to, Universal Soldier basically created the best Terminator fistfight scene you’ve never seen.
