There's a restless energy and vitality to Sam Rockwell that seems apparent even when he isn't actually doing anything on screen - these stiller moments seem to be little more than interludes between outbursts, and his filmography is reflective of this tendency towards manic performances. Rockwell's charismatic presence shone through in his breakthrough performance in George Clooney's Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind and seemed to have been fine tuned by the time he appeared in the under-appreciated Seven Psychopaths. But perhaps his greatest role(s) so far in his career came in Moon, the science fiction one man show in which he played Sam Bell, the solitary scientist slowly losing his sense of identity. Unfortunately, Rockwell hasn't appeared in anything noteworthy since his great supporting role in the coming-of-age comedy The Way, Way Back, and this year's remake of Poltergeist was a particularly lamentable addition to his filmography. It's a shame his starring role in Napoleon Dynamite creators Don Verdean has been so poorly received - let's hope his career picks up again in 2016.
