After the critical failure of Batman And Robin, DC decided to reboot the Batman franchise. A lot of ideas were bandied about but one of the earliest was an adaptation of Batman Beyond. The beloved animated series followed an aged Bruce Wayne mentoring the young Terry McGinnis as he became the new Batman.

McGinnis is the antithesis to Bruce Wayne and their dynamic, coupled with the futuristic Gotham City made for an incredible series. Creators Paul Dini and Alan Burnett were involved with bringing the character to life and even completed a script. Despite multiple meetings and some legitimate progress however, Dini himself said that none of them were enthused enough with the story and they decided to give it up along the way.

This may be a telling sign for a character who doesn't obviously fit into the DCEU. He might be an awesome hero for an animated series but it's clear that the higher-ups fear that his lack of notoriety might not make him suitable for a film and that writers would struggle to make him more accessible.

Despite his radically different nature from the traditional idea of Batman, McGinnis can act as a breath of fresh air to the mythos and give viewers the unexpected. Maybe one day he'll get the chance to prove that.
