10 Amazing Films Directed By Women

8. Dogfight

Warner Bros.

There are so few reasons why Dogfight isn't more well known. Nancy Savoca creates a fascinating slice of life tale taking place over the course of course of one night (well, into the following morning, and there is an epilogue) before a Marine ships out to Vietnam.

River Phoenix stars in what is sadly one of his last films before his untimely death in 1993, and while the story is one that most audiences would have seen before (gross men decide to make a competition where they each try to bring the ugliest girl, one guy suddenly feels bad about it and actually starts to like the girl), what really separates it from others of its ilk is the vulnerability and nuance that he brings to the lead role.

What unfolds is a sweet, genuine romance film that is surprisingly underrated, given the talent that it showcases both in front of and behind the camera.
