10 Amazing Horror Movies That Are Total Nonsense
2. Beau Is Afraid
Ari Aster's Hereditary and Midsommar had their fair share of WTF moments. With that said, they don't hold a candle to the director's third outing, Beau Is Afraid.
In this three-hour tragicomedy, the titular character (Joaquin Phoenix) embarks on an oneric odyssey to reach his family home after hearing his mother has been decapitated by a chandelier.
Simply put, Beau Is Afraid feels less like a horror, and more like a fever dream. Through no fault of his own, the poor protagonist encounters an unrealistic level of hostility everywhere he goes. Even though he's viciously stabbed by a naked serial killer early on, that's nothing compares to what awaits him.
For the most part, the story plays out like it could almost take place in reality. But during the climax, Beau descends into a whole new realm of chaos and madness unlike anything else seen in the previous two acts.
Beau Is Afraid may be Aster's most polarising movie to date, but it's also his most ambitious. Although many movies are referred to as "one of a kind," Beau Is Afraid truly deserves that mantle.
