10 Amazing Horror Movies With Soul Destroying Endings
8. The Rental
If you're after nonstop action from your horror movies, The Rental is not for you. The first half is essentially a straight-up mumblecore movie (it's even co-written by mumblecore maestro Joe Swanberg), about a group of people on vacation.
They have family drama, there's a love triangle in there, a character is stressed out about work - nothing you'd expect to lead to their grisly deaths.
However, it's because the first half focuses so intimately on the characters' own drama that the ending can be as impactful as it is. Halfway through it's revealed that the house they're in has been bugged, and there's a masked killer in the shadows exploiting each character's fears, before swooping in for the kill.
After coldly murdering all of these people you've become quite fond of, the unnamed killer quietly packs up his surveillance gear and disappears without a trace. The very final scenes see him methodically repeating his actions in another rental home, with the implication being that he's been killing for a long time, and will continue to do so unimpeded.
