We watched Spike transform from bad-boy antagonist to beloved romantic lead, and his sacrifice to save Buffy will forever be remembered as a heroic act of love. Their tearful goodbye was matched by the tears of the audience who also bid Spike farewell.

To make it worse, the familiar Sunnydale falls into the Hellmouth crater, symbolising the end of Buffy’s duty in a bittersweet moment. It truly felt like goodbye, and many fans simply weren’t ready to do so.
