10 Amazing Horror TV Shows With Soul Destroying Endings
5. Death Note
One of the most iconic anime of all time had one hell of an emotional ending.
The series was intelligent, suspenseful and really bloody dark. At the heart of the drama was the twisted genius Light Yagami who, using the titular notebook, vowed to cleanse the world of evil. But, as is often the case, power corrupts. Light from far from innocent at the start of the how, but his intentions were at least somewhat honourable.
Sacrificing anyone who stands in his way, Light’s brutality catches up with him by the end of the show, as he is confronted and cornered. Thinking he has outsmarted everyone, which he usually has, Light’s final plan falls around him. Like Icarus, he was blinded by ambition and it was his downfall.
His fate is simple; the Shinigami Ryuk writes Light’s name in the Death Note, and Light dies of a heart attack. What seems like a fairly tame death scene is made far more melancholy by the beautiful art and haunting music. The sun sets on Light, alone in the world despite the adoration he received as Kira. The music abruptly halts, Ryuk writes the name, and Light unceremoniously dies on a flight of stairs.
It's bittersweet, and even after everything Light has done, you can’t help but get a lump in your throat as the credits begin to roll.
