Denis Villeneuve has become one of the most universally adored and appreciated filmmakers of the 21st century. Those who don't know his name or face will instantly recognise his work on the silver screen, such as Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, and, of course, the rejuvenated and revitalised Dune franchise.

However, before all of these came Incendies. Similar to that of Yorgos Lanthimos' Dogtooth and Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Biutiful, Villeneuve's small-scale, foreign language flick quickly garnered him notoriety and recognition within Hollywood, and for good reason.

Now, buckle in because Incendies will shock you to your very core. Tasked with fulfilling the last wishes of their dying mother, two twins embark on a journey toward the Middle East in the hopes of delivering two respective letters from her to their father and half-brother.

The film is filled with various twists, turns, and subsequent revelations, and this originates from the fact that the twins had always believed that their father was dead and did not know that they had another sibling. It makes for a bleak watch, as the more the twins discover about her past, the more shocking and soul-destroying it becomes for them and the viewer as it is revealed that the father and sibling that they have been looking for are, in fact, the same person.

Avoiding the specifics, the revelation is a truly gut-wrenching moment that leaves you speechless. In a period where predictable twists are the norm, Incendies breaks the mould, making for an unforgettable cinematic experience.
