10 Amazing Movies Under 90 Minutes Long

3. What We Do In The Shadows

Another genre of film that needed a healthy dose of creativity injected into it, vampire movies had been dragged through the mud thanks to a slew of misfires including Dracula Untold, Dracula 2000 and the Twilight series (if you even consider those proper vampire movies).

But in 2014, along came Taika Waititi with What We Do In The Shadows, a whip-smart mockumentary about a group of bloodsuckers sharing a flat in New Zealand.

This situation is very much played for laughs (what would vampires watch on YouTube? How would they divide up chores?) and the movie smartly plays on all our preconceived notions about the fang-toothed creatures, subverting them at every opportunity.

The movie even brilliantly acknowledges the cinematic downfall of vampires by keeping a Count Orlok lookalike locked in the basement while his far more contemporary flatmates live above ground, a clear shot at movies like Twilight which don't exactly depict the creatures in their traditional form.

And that really is What We Do In The Shadows in a nutshell; it's funny, yes, but it's also respectful, and it doesn't poke fun at vampire lore so much as it does embrace it and exploit it for laughs. And that's okay.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
