10 Amazing Roles That Saved Typecast Actors

6. Elijah Wood - Sin City

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6G6Z60EPieA When most people think of Elijah Wood, they not only think of him as Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings, but they also think of the kid from Flipper, and the nerd from The Faculty. Until Robert Rodriguez's fantastic Sin City, people did not see Wood's capacity to play a psychopathic killer, one he plays with demented glee as the silent, emotionless maniac Kevin, who doesn't even scream when he gets devoured by wolves and then decapitated. Though Wood continues to make appearances in Peter Jackson's current Hobbit trilogy, his work on Sin City has evidently made it clear that he has some range indeed; as a result he was cast in the TV series Wilfred, where he plays a manic depressive who has troubling visions of his neighbour's dog as a man in a dog suit. Furthermore, released in the UK just last week, Wood played the lead in the remake of the 1980 horror film Maniac, delivering an astonishing and disturbing performance as mentally ill serial killer Frank. To say that Wood has "made it" as an actor of more serious, transgressive fare is an understatement indeed.
