10 Amazing Sci-Fi Movies You Need To Stop Sleeping On

1. Coherence

The Vast of Night
Ugly Duckling Films

Even surrounded by the likes of Melancholia and Hardcore Henry, Coherence might just be the most unique and wonderfully odd film to make it onto this list. In fact, it might just be the most unique sci-fi film of modern cinema, with a one-of-a-kind production and a stunning, confusing, endlessly entertaining plot.

Released in 2013, the film takes place during a dinner party between friends. After a comet passes overhead, causing a power outage in the area, the group find an alternate reality complete with separate versions of themselves. As the bizarre night escalates, the groups find themselves split and mixed up, and must figure out who is who, and how to get things back to normal.

Describing the film as a surreal psychological sci-fi thriller, director James Ward Byrkit filmed the whole thing in his own house, without a script and with actors who improvised their entire roles. This indie, improvisational tone makes for an atmospheric film rife with terrifying twists and palpable claustrophobia, intertwined with creepy visuals and confrontations. And at 89 minutes, it doesn't stick around - it hits you fast and hard, leaving you dumbfounded by the time the credits roll.

When a film is as unique and daring as this, it just has to be seen.
