For a big screen adaptation of a publishing phenomenon helmed by one of the greatest living directors, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo didn't make half as big a splash as it should've done. Perhaps it was the fact that the books had already been made into a successful trilogy in their native Sweden, or that the American version took to long, or that people were confused why Daniel Craig was speaking in his English accent in a Scandinavian setting and playing a man Mikael Blomkvist. Whatever, the film wasn't quite as big a hit as many thought it would or should've been. Which meant that production on a sequel, the adaptation of the second in Stieg Larsson's trilogy of "Millenium" crime thrillers, stalled. Not long before the film was released Fincher stated his intention to film the second and third films - The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Played The Hornet's Nest - back-to-back. Rooney Mara, who was absolutey electrifying as main character Lisbeth Salander, recently reported that seemed unlikely. Apparently a script for a second film is still being written, which doesn't exactly prove anything. With its stars ageing and moving onto bigger projects, The Girl Who Played With Fire looks dead in the water.
