10 Animated Films You May Not Have Seen (But Should)
9. When The Wind Blows (1986)
When the Wind Blows is a British film based on a graphic novel of the same name, and while it has a compelling story, the style of animation sets it apart from other films in the genre. The characters are drawn in traditional cel animation while their surroundings are comprised of real objects, which are animated via stop-motion animation.
This creates a visualization of the world, which quickly establishes a stark duality between the people on the screen and the place in which they are living. The story follows an elderly couple, James and Hilda Bloggs, who live in fear of nuclear war breaking out between the United States, its allies, and the Soviet Union.
As war looms on the horizon, the couple recall what life was like during World War II; a conflict they struggled though but survived. Unfortunately, the story isn't as pleasant as history proved, and a nuclear conflict breaks out across the world.
The couple maintains a healthy attitude having been instructed to do so by the government, but they both become sick with radiation poisoning. Despite their predicament, they maintain their defiant British attitude hearkening back to the days of WWII by living the mantra, "Keep calm and carry on" in a way only the British could.
