The story of Watership Down was recently retold in animated form via Netflix, but this entry focuses on the original animated film from 1978. This is another movie that many parents sat their kids in front of thinking it would be a lovely tale of cute rabbits, but like Grave of the Fireflies, they would have made a grievous error in judgement.

Watership Down may look cute and cuddly, but the story is dark, the nature of the world these rabbits live in is cruel, and there's more rabbit gore than any kid should contend with. Watch this as an adult after the kids go to sleep.

The story is about a rabbit named Fiver who suffers an apocalyptic vision threatening his warren. He and his sister Hazel try to convince the rabbit elders of the impending danger, but they scoff at his warnings, and the warren is ultimately destroyed, leaving only eight survivors.

The story follows their flight to safety, their joining with a militaristic group of rabbits, and their further fight for survival. The British film is faithful to the book, and like the novel, it's full of brutal slaughter, militaristic rabbits, and adult themes, which are definitely not oriented towards children.
