9. Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) Spider-Man

As is the case with so many of the superhero girlfriends included on the list, a lot of the choices don't simply fail as a result of the actresses who played them, but as a result of the movie's script. Kirsten Dunst played the role of damsel in distress three times over the course of the Tobey Maguire led Spider-Man movies, and though she herself puts in an admirable performance, the script only really ever calls for her to scream and get kidnapped - so much so, in fact, that it's only possible to associate her character with being helpless and therefore annoying. Fans have always been divided down the middle when it comes to Dunst as Watson; there are those who think she did a good job, was appropriately sexy, and delivered a well-rounded character (with the material she was given, anyway); others can't ignore the fact that she's a little bit wet, is outrageously indecisive and ohmyGod, why is she always screaming?! Still, compared with the likes of Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy, Watson feels like something of a relic in retrospect. And yet we can't deny that the scene in the rain with the... well, you know.
