10 Appalling Comedy Films From People Who Should Have Known Better

8. Son Of The Mask (2005, Dir. Lawrence Guterman)

son of the maskWhat Was The Comedy? A belated sequel to The Mask. Why Was It Appalling? Apart from the more general flaws of poor writing and direction, Son Of The Mask had almost no connection to the original film. It was released eleven years after The Mask, had a different director, writers, characters, and cast, and the biggest flaw of all: no Jim Carrey. And since Carrey€™s performance was what gave The Mask most of its most memorable and funny moments, his absence from the film really shot it in the foot. As did its huge disconnect from its predecessor and its considerable amount of pretty disturbing imagery and adult content such as the main character's infant son planning to have him sectioned and his dog wanting to kill his son. Who Should Have Known Better? The studio executives who just wouldn€™t let the project die despite it being in development hell for nearly a decade. Why They Should Have Known Better? If you€™re doing a sequel to a Jim Carrey film a decade after that film comes out, you need Jim Carrey. He was pretty much the biggest draw for The Mask and it€™s one of his most well known roles. He€™s the best known thing about the film so making a sequel not featuring him or his character is like spending the $84 million budget on building a hotel halfway up Mount Everest.
