10 Awesome 2023 Movies That Didn't Deserve To Flop

The Year of Flops has had some unfortunate casualties.

2023 has certainly been one hell of a strange year for the box office, where Barbie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie are the only two films to have cracked a billion dollars. Who could've ever seen that coming?

Furthermore, a slew of divisive blockbusters have underperformed or outright flopped, including sequels in the Ant-Man, Indiana Jones, and Transformers franchises.

But what about those genuinely good, even great films that also tanked at the box office? It's always sad to see enjoyable, well-crafted movies fail to turn a profit theatrically, and over the course of the last ten months, these 10 films count among the most frustrating commercial calamities.

In some cases the flop came as a total surprise to box office analysts, who anticipated nothing but a stone cold success, while in others the writing was very clearly on the wall from the get-go.

Whether their failure was predictable or not, though, these movies all deserved to do so much better, and while some will surely be vindicated on streaming in the long-term, it concerningly speaks to the increasingly volatile and risk-averse nature of Hollywood as a whole...

10. Killers Of The Flower Moon

The fact that Killers of the Flower Moon exists at all is something to celebrate in 2023 - a 3.5-hour epic crime drama from one of the few bonafide masters of the medium, Martin Scorsese.

And to be fair to Apple, they totally knew what they were getting into when they gave Marty $200 million to make his latest masterpiece.

Apple likely never expected it to rake in hundreds of million dollars theatrically, but rather serve as promotion for the film's upcoming release on their streaming service, Apple TV+.

Apple basically has more money than God and is clearly willing to spend big to bring prestigious filmmakers to its platform.

All the same, it's a damn shame that Scorsese's new film fell off a cliff after a solid opening weekend, and it likely won't even match its budget in box office receipts.

Serious movies for adults have certainly struggled in recent years, and Killers of the Flower Moon's epic runtime surely made it so much easier for most to simply wait until it hits streaming sometime before year's end.
