10 Awesome 2023 Movies That Didn't Deserve To Flop

3. Dumb Money

It's just too easy to make jokes about Sony's ironically-titled Dumb Money - a comedic dramatisation of 2021's GameStop short squeeze from the reliable Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella).

Yet given that it's actually a smart, entertaining, well-acted movie, the fact that it tanked at the box office isn't really something to relish at all.

Even with a sensible $30 million price tag considering the talent involved, Dumb Money recouped barely half its budget, netting just $16.8 million.

Prior to its release, many commented that it looked like a "streaming movie," and for as fun as the trailers made it out to be, it simply didn't tout enough of anything to convince audiences en masse to leave their homes for it.

That and the lack of prominent awards buzz at this time of year likely sealed its fate theatrically. Don't be shocked if it becomes something of a sleeper hit once it hits streaming, though.
