1. The World's End
Released On: 19th July (UK), 23rd August (US)
Whats It About: This third teaming of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg is the final part in the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy. As with the previous two entries Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz, its a British slacker pastiche of a much worn genre; this time, the sci-fi sub-genre, the apocalypse. Pegg plays Gary King, who reunites his old gang to complete the 12 pub bar crawl they failed in their youth, only to slowly discover something more monumental is happening as the night goes on. Its worth noting that although its the third part of a trilogy, The Worlds End is a standalone piece and such is deserving of its placing on the list.
Why Itll Be Awesome: On the face of it The Worlds End isnt as enticing a concept as the other Flavours films, but to dismiss it ignores the strength of Shaun and Fuzz. Both were knowing to just the right level and remain funny after multiple viewings. Everyone will always praise Edgar Wrights kinetic direction, bringing a real sheen to urban and rural England, but their other ace is the unique characters. Fuzzs Nicholas Angel isn't just policeman Shaun and likewise Nick Frost comes at lovable slackers from completely different angles, both actors dissecting different types of everyman across the two films. The trailer that dropped last week presented both actors playing different characters yet again and with Wrights frantic direction in full swing, this is a strong contender for comedy (and film) of the summer.
