3. Ridley Scott - A Good Year (2006)
You know Ridley Scott because he probably directed your favourite sci-fi movie ever, which is either
Alien or
Blade Runner, or maybe it's
Prometheus, because you didn't think it was
that bad, all right? Okay, whatever you say, Chief. Aside from directing those sci-fi classics, of course, he also helmed
Gladiator and
Thelma & Louise. So his filmmaker preferences fall under sci-fi, historial epic and on occasion, gritty drama, yeah? So what in God's righteous name is
A Good Year all about? A rom-com from the director who brought you
Black Hawk Down? I mean, look at it, all wedged into Scott's filmography between
Kingdom of Heaven and
American Gangster like that's the most natural thing in the world. The only way you know for sure that this is a Ridley Scott movie is because Russell Crowe in it, and those two absolutely will not make movies without one another. But this is actually just a film about Crowe drinking wine and smiling and being nice, and was made presumably as an excuse for Scott and Crowe to go on holiday to Provence with Marion Cotillard and get paid at the same time.
