The past tense foretells the horror we are about to witness, as a giant monster descends from the sky and terrorises New York, which is all caught on film. The military attempt to bomb the creature, but fail in doing so as it unleashes its vengeance on all around it, including those recording it. At the end of the found footage, we see a large object falling from the sky. Prophetic.
