5. Invasion Of The Body Snatchers
Though a remake of the 1956 Don Siegel-directed classic, the 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers stands as one of the strongest movie remakes ever, in many ways enhancing the terror of the original movie, thanks to advanced special effects and a steely performance from lead Donald Sutherland. We all know the premise by now; Matthew Bennell (Sutherland) is a San Francisco health inspector who, along with his colleague Elizabeth Driscoll (Brooke Adams), discovers that human beings are being substituted by aliens for so-called "pod people", identical physical replicants of the person, distinguished by their lack of emotion. The climax of this identity-theft thriller is utterly terrifying, as Matthew burns down a pod-growing facility, and in the film's final scene, is spotted by another survivor, Nancy (Veronica Cartwright), walking around town. Matthew then points to her and lets out a loud pod scream, making it clear that Matthew has become a pod person, while the implication is that Nancy is going to be assimilated also.
