5. True Romance (1993)
Directed by Tony Scott in top form, written with gusto by Tarantino, boasting Hans Zimmers cheery score and a spot on cast, True Romance is full of delightful moments and witty dialogue. But it is also quite a violent film and the bathroom fight scene is one you're not likely to forget. Alabama (sexy and gleeful Patricia Arquette) enters her hotel room only to find henchman Virgil (a deliciously madcap James Gandolfini) waiting for her, a shotgun on his lap. A sick and violent interrogation scene follows where Virgil punches the lights out of the helpless girl until her face is covered with blood. The scene gets even harder to watch when the camera cuts to her boyfriend Clarence, on his way back to the hotel, totally unaware of the situation at hand. But then Alabama manages to fight back and use all the elements in the room to attack her aggressor. She stabs him with a Swiss army knife, smacks him with the head of a statue, spreads shampoo in his eyes, hits him with the top of a toilet, sets him on fire with a spray and a lighter and stabs him again. When he is finally down, she grabs his gun and shoots him several times in the chest at point blank range. Finally, with her remaining strength, she hits him hard with the empty gun until Clarence comes in and stops her. Although the scene is extremely intense and violent, it is shot beautifully. When Alabamas screams fade away to be replaced by soft music, you can't help but feel some tenderness towards her as she is going mental.
