In 2008, Bollywood's brightest arrived in the city to film Hum Tum Aur Ghost, a supernatural romp concerning a handsome photographer (Arshad Warsi) who realizes he can hear the voices of the dead. Things got even more complicated when he decided to help the spirits with their otherworldy problems. If the story sounds a bit familiar, it's because this is a loose reworking of Ricky Gervais's Ghost Town, only with less dentistry, a more upbeat tone and a convincing romantic plotline. Director Kabeer Kaushik staged some exciting Newcastle-based set pieces, from big dance numbers to popcorn-dislodging car stunts. Pictured above is a sequence shot on Grey Street. This intriguing cultural mix didn't set the Indian box office alight, so the relationship between this massive film industry and the classic architecture of Newcastle failed to take off. However comedy Shaandaar went to nearby Saltburn a couple of years back.
