3. Star Trek 4 The Voyage Home

Well would you expect anything less than a Star Trek entry from the self-confessed Trekspert (I have invented my own definition for a Star Trek fan due to a previous controversy). Trek 4 is a huge fun film for all the family, with a massive heart, a not overly preachy environmental message and lovely performances from all the Star Trek original series veterans. It really gives each character their own moment in the spotlight and the rapport and familiarity between the actors shines. TOS crew travel back in time to modern day San Francisco (at the time of the film this meant the 1980s) to transport a couple of humpback whales back to the future as only whale song can save mankind. (Please bear with me, the plot may sound absurd but it works brilliantly). It is an extremely funny film too, skillfully and warmly directed by Leonard Nimoy who also conceived the story. If you have any oh its just another Star Trek film feelings put them aside - I promise you this is just a good movie and the fact that it is a Star Trek film is just an added bonus. It is obviously a delight for Star Trek fans as it completes the trilogy of movies that started with Wrath of Khan and we see many narrative points started in Khan resolved. Our much loved friends relationships evolve and it is a pleasure to see Captain Kirk and co growing old disgracefully. It is full of great scenes and oneliners (and a double dumb ass to you) and the cast are clearly having a riot. I have put it on this list because I do not think it gets enough love or appreciation for being an intelligent blockbuster. I feel a 10 Reasons Star Trek The Voyage Home is the best Star Trek Film list coming on.
