10 Awesome Movie Inventions (That Would Suck In Real Life)
9. Star Trek: Teleporter
Star Trek's simple cost-saving plot device spawned one of the most wanted and useful inventions ever: the teleporter. With no apparent travel distance limit, the teleporter has solved all problems related to travel, ranging from Interplanetary travel all the way down to a drive to the shops. What's even better is that more recent Star Trek incarnations have miniaturised teleporters down to a gizmo that can fit in a pocket. This is undoubtedly an awesome piece of technology, but for every problem it solves, a few other ones are created.
The ability to teleport anywhere with no distance limitations will mean that crime will be a major issue and the job of being a cop would be exponentially more difficult. Previous difficulties of would-be criminals, such as smuggling items past security guards, major bank heist escapes, and secretive drug deals, will be gone as the teleporter will provide every crime with a convenient escape route.
Entertaining the idea that crime won't be an issue, the existence of teleporters will bring down the collapse of a major industry: tourism. Part of the appeal of tourism is the thrill of making the effort to go to rarely visited places or the occasional spontaneous trip to Paris. By being able to teleport anywhere at anytime, visiting special places like Everest has been downgraded from 'once-in-a-lifetime' to 'lazy Sunday afternoon activity'.
