5. Tic Tac Toe (War Games)

wargames A simple game, tic tac toe involves two players competing against each other playing X and O on a 3-by-3 grid, with the goal merely being to get three of your letters in a row. Given the finite number of moves in the game, tic tac toe is rarely played by those older than school children as games generally end up in a tie. In the prescient '80s cold war thriller War Games, Matthew Broderick's David Lightman, like Ferris Bueller, hacks a computer from the confines of his bedroom. However, rather than changing his grades he plays a game. Unfortunately, and unbeknownst to him at the time, the game he is playing is that of nuclear war. In order to prevent the war game from becoming a war reality, they infuse the simplicity and banality of tic tac toe into the computer who ultimately rejects the game, preferring the more nuanced chess to a game that often ends in a tie.
