5. Lars And The Real Girl (2007)
The film Tumblr was made for, this is nevertheless an original, touching, sad, and poetic film that casts no aspersions on the mental state of the lead character, who orders a sex doll, calls it Bianca and falls in love with it. It might sound a bit similar to the 80s cheesefest Mannequin, but this film is different because at no point are we fooled into thinking that Bianca is real. She exists solely as a figment of Lars imagination, and the film is about him and the small circle of people he touches, as they realise that this doll is necessary for his precarious mental development. The film, whilst working as character study, also works as a little expose on small town life; the townsfolk, while being tentative about Bianca at first, realise quickly that treating Bianca as a real person is the kindest thing to do. The film is unashamedly lovely, wholly unique, and quietly unforgettable. It might be as twee as they come, but youre not going to see a film that means as well as this very often.
