5. Mississippi Grind
What do you get when you put Ben Mendelsohn and Ryan Reynolds in a film together? A bloody good time at the movies, that's what. Despite positive reviews, Mississippi Grind came and went with little fanfare in 2015. A shame, really, when it's so much fun to watch from start to finish, filled with drama, comedy and characters you actually care about - all wrapped up in a flick about addiction. Ben Mendelsohn, an immensely talented actor capable of delivering both frightening and endearing performances in equal measure, plays a down-on-his-luck gambler who teams up with Ryan Reynolds - on excellent form here - in an attempt to win it big. The best thing about Mississippi Grind, perhaps, is the way that its potentially well-worn story is told in an unpredictable fashion. "Competent" is a word that gets thrown around a lot when describing films, but this movie - essentially, a road movie - is exactly that. It might just well be one of the year's most overlooked films, all things considered.
