2. Romantic Comedy - Silver Linings Playbook
Silver Linings Playbook hasnt had much chance to really make its staple on the market yet, but given time will be easily of the best rom-coms to date. Some of the biggest downfalls to rom-coms is they generally ostracize the male viewership or genuinely make us hate every character on the screen. Whats refreshing about Playbook is that it appeals to a broader audience (both men and women) without being overbearing on the love story. The story follows Bradley Cooper after hes generally had a mental breakdown. Leaving the mental institution hes set on a path to redefine his life when he crosses paths with Jennifer Lawrence (also mentally unstable after the death of her husband) Every character has there quirks, and even the worst of characters are enjoyable to watch (Robert De Niro as the father or Julia Styles as the overbearing sister of Jennifer Lawrences character). Generally between the main love interests youre always rooting for one or the other knowing either way they will usually end up together regardless. But both mental states between Lawrence and Cooper are different yet alike that both of them are equally entertaining. Playbook is definitely a little more dramatic than most rom-coms, but thats what makes it so amazing. For once youre not sitting there waiting for the couple to get together and get it over and done with. Both characters paths are intriguing and your anticipation isnt just to see the leads come together in a romantic embrace, but to see them defeat their own personal demons. Hopefully with more time and more exposure, future rom-coms will follow this formula.
