10 Awesome Philip Seymour Hoffman Performances

9. Sandy Lyle in Along Came Polly

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNsAqmDqU5E OK, so I realise this is a bit of a curve ball but hear me out, and check out the above clip. The film is not good at all, but that doesn't change the fact that he is absolutely fantastic in it. It's so rare to find an actor who, by and large, opts for such serious roles yet every now and then delivers a rib shatteringly comic performance, and this is certainly one of them. Playing a cocky, bewildering, self-assured idiot who bumbles and guffaws his way from one situation to the next with an exaggerative slapstick flair, Hoffman is nothing short of perfect as Sandy Lyle. Stand out scenes have to be his repeated shouting of "Make it rain!" and "Rain dance!" whilst playing basketball, as well as a sequence where he is attempting to clear his throat, for my money the finest cough ever committed to celluloid (and if a silly cough isn't justification enough to place this role in at number 9 then I don't know what is).
