10 Awesome Recent Horror Movies That Didn't Deserve To Bomb

2. Annihilation (2018)

The Night House Rebecca Hall
Netflix

By all means, Annihilation should’ve been a bigger hit. It’s based on a popular sci-fi novel by Jeff VanderMeer, it stars Natalie Portman, and it received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics. Sadly, the movie only made $43.1 million against a budget of $40 - 55 million, a fact even more head-scratching when you watch the flick itself. Annihilation is a wonder of an experience, with gorgeous visuals and genuine thrills all rolled together with engrossing explorations of heavy themes such as depression and grief.

The story follows a biologist who joins a mission inside Area X, a mysterious phenomenon expanding across the American coastline. Natalie Portman gives an esteemed lead performance here and is thankfully part of a cast that gives it their all as well. The entire thing feels like a breath of fresh air for both the horror and sci-fi genre and is a must-watch if you’re a fan of either genre.

Alex Garland has proven over and over again how talented of a director and screenwriter he is with outings like Ex Machina, Men, and Annihilation earns its place in his ever-growing consistently great filmography.
