10 Awesome Sci-Fi Twists You Never Saw Coming

1. The Empire Strikes Back - No, I Am Your Father!

Looking back, it's hard to imagine Star Wars going any other way, but in 1980, when The Empire Strikes Back first hit theaters, there was nobody around who could have guessed Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker's father all along. Obi-Wan would have had to be lying in the first movie, and that couldn't be... right?

As it turns out, it was all told "from a certain point of view," but that didn't make this revelation any easier for Luke (or the audience) to swallow. The scene where Vader reveals his relationship to Luke is one of the most impactful in all of cinema, even if most people misquote it all the time.

It's often misquoted as "Luke, I am your father," but that's not the way it really went down. After slicing off his son's hand, he reaches out to him, offering the galaxy. Luke refuses, and to this, Vader says, "Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your father." Luke retorts, "He told me enough! He told me you killed him."

Vader replies rather matter-of-factly, "No. I, am your father."

It was (and still is) the biggest twist in a science fiction movie nobody saw coming, and if you don't believe it, watch it with a kid and see the look on their face when they see it for the first time. You won't be disappointed.
