Danny Boyle's sci-fi thriller Sunshine is a perfect example of a fun and entertaining science fiction movie that has a completely implausible plot. If you can get over the underlying premise—that humanity needs to reignite the Sun in order to survive extinction—it's a great flick.

However, if you happened to wander into the theater when it was first released after seeing the trailer, you might have been surprised at the movie you ended up seeing. The trailer had dozens of action shots, showing that it wasn't going to be boring, but the one thing it didn't make clear was the genre.

Sure, it's sci-fi, but not entirely. For the first two acts of the film, the crew of the Icarus II make their way to the Sun, so they can reignite it with a nuclear weapon that had the same mass as the Moon. The journey goes well enough, right up to the point they find the derelict ship that was sent before them, Icarus I, which was believed to have been destroyed.

Suddenly, this entertaining sci-fi film completely flips genre to become more of a horror/slasher movie. The Captain of the old ship had gone insane and slaughtered his old crew, but he wasn't finished. He hopped over to the Icarus II and got back up to his old tricks! It's a twist that not only came out of nowhere but it also completely altered the genre of the film.
