Soylent Green is a brilliant science fiction film from 1973, that paints a picture of the world in 2022. Overpopulation has resulted in a major shortage of food, water, and living space, as more than 40 million people are crammed into New York City alone.

Jobs are hard to come by, and taking a day off is unheard of in this dystopia, and that's one of the reasons Detective Frank Thorn takes his job so seriously.

Food shortages are the biggest worry, as millions around the globe starve, so Detective Thorn takes a case involving the murder of an influential and powerful man who was on the Board of Directors of Soylent Industries, the company that supplies its "Soylent" cakes of different colors to the masses. It's the only sustainable food item around, and people no longer eat fruit, vegetables, or animals to survive.

As his investigation continues, his friend and source of information, Sol Roth, otherwise known as "Book, "chooses to end his life in one of the euthanasia clinics set up in the city to help alleviate overpopulation. Thorn attempts to stop him but arrives too late.

Thorn then boards the truck that moves the bodies from the clinic, only to find out that they are processed and turned into Soylent Green, the popular cakes now on the market! Soylent Green is people! It's made out of people!

It's a dark story of how our future may turn out if we don't address the concerns of climate change and overpopulation.
