10 Awesome True Stories That Still Need The Hollywood Treatment

1. The Making of Pulgasari

The insanity of North Korea and Dear Leader Kim Jong-il's reign has gone tragically overlooked, even though we're supposed to be deathly afraid of North Korea as one of the so-called "Axis of Evil" nations. Here's just one example. Among many other things, Kim Jong-il was an avid movie lover. But he was disappointed with the domestic film market, and he made the totally sane decision to amend this problem by kidnapping a famous South Korean director and his ex-wife, and force him to make movies.

Shin Sang-ok and Choi Eun-hee were held captive by the dictator from 1978 to 1986, during which he directed seven films. The "crowning achievement" of this period is Pulgasari, a Godzilla rip-off featuring unsubtle Communist propaganda. There is nothing about this story not suitable for a movie. After years of imprisonment, Shin discovered that his ex-wife was alive when Kim brought them both to a formal dinner party. The experience actually caused Shin and Choi to fall back in love and remarry. And it all culminated in a dramatic escape in East Berlin, complete with a car chase! It seriously astounds me that not even the Korean film industry has turned this into a movie yet. You don't even have to make anything up to make it more exciting!
