10 Awesome True Stories That Still Need The Hollywood Treatment
9. The Siege of Malta
It's 1565. The Ottoman Empire, at the peak of its might, wants Malta, a small but strategically vital island in the Mediterranean. Suleiman the Magnificent sends a force of nearly 50,000 men to take the island. Defending it are 500 Knights Hospitaller, backed up by around 5,500 Maltese, Spanish, Italian, and other soldiers. It's kind of like the Battle of Helm's Deep, except way more desperate for the besieged and way more morally ambiguous (Christian West vs. Muslim East, not really a "right" side).
It was a four-month battle that's widely considered one of the fiercest in all of history. Heads were shot out of cannons. By the end, the Ottomans limped home with significant losses. In spite of all odds, the Knights of Malta had held their ground. If 300 can do well, I see no reason this story can't. After all, the underdogs in this fight won.
