3. The Blue People of Kentucky

For over a century and a half, the Fugate family of Troublesome Creek, Kentucky suffered a most unusual malady. It seemed that blue skin ran in their blood, a result of an incredibly unlikely genetic fluke in the union of French immigrant Martin Fugate and Elizabeth Smith. While these blue-hued people lived otherwise healthy lives, they generally avoided society out of shame of their appearance. But in the 1960's, hematologist Martin Cawein heard of the blue people and journeyed to Troublesome Creek to examine them. Using new understanding of genetics and enzymes, Cawein concocted a cure for the condition. This is the perfect setup for a medical mystery that could be equal parts strange and inspirational.
