10 Awesome War Movies About Obscure Conflicts
6. Lebanon
Israel’s short 1982 war with Lebanon is a story rarely told on film. This powerful, claustrophobic movie is told entirely from the point of view of an Israeli tank team, and it offers an extraordinary insight into a lesser-known conflict.
Four naive young tank operators accompany a team of paratroopers into Lebanon, detailed to offer heavy support as the soldiers mop up in a town that has been flattened by the Israeli Air Force. The unit, however, strays off course and gets bogged down in hostile territory. Their tank damaged and the team haemorrhaging morale, they must wait for evacuation.
The film's sparse action is contained entirely inside the tank. Even the shots of the exterior world are seen through the narrow, restricted view of the tank's gunsights.
Lebanon has a unique, dark visual style and an evocative, eerie soundtrack. It's a taut and claustrophobic film that was justly celebrated for its original approach to war filmmaking.
It not only shows the violence and horror of war, but the confusion and desperation experienced by young, frightened men on the front line.
